EDITORS COMMENTS
Juan Jose Latorre Benavente (1846-1912): A Chilean Naval Officer of Distinction This portrait depicts Juan Jose Latorre Benavente, a prominent Chilean naval officer of the late 19th century. Born in Valparaiso, Chile, in 1846, Latorre began his naval career at a young age and rose through the ranks to become a vice admiral in the Chilean Navy. The engraving, created by Capuz and published in The Spanish and American Illustration in 1879, captures Latorre's distinguished appearance. He is depicted wearing a formal suit, complete with a bow tie and a cap, and sporting a full beard that frames his strong, determined face. The use of color in the engraving adds depth and vibrancy to the image, making Latorre's features stand out. Latorre's naval career was marked by significant achievements, particularly during the War of the Pacific (1879-1884) between Chile and Peru. He played a crucial role in several key battles, including the Battle of Iquique and the Battle of Punta Angamos, where he commanded the Chilean ironclad Blanco Encalada. Latorre's bravery and strategic prowess were instrumental in securing Chile's victory in the war. After the war, Latorre continued to serve in the Chilean Navy, eventually retiring in 1902. He passed away in Valparaiso in 1912, leaving behind a legacy as one of Chile's most esteemed naval officers. This portrait, created over a century ago, serves as a testament to Latorre's enduring importance in Chilean history and the annals of the South American navy.
