The Kapellbrucke, or Chapel Bridge, is a historic covered bridge in the picturesque Swiss city of Lucerne (Luzern). This iconic landmark, spanning the Reuss River, dates back to the 14th century and is renowned for its distinctive wooden construction and intricate interior decorations. In this photograph, taken in the 1910s, we are granted a rare glimpse into the bridge's interior. The wooden ceiling is adorned with vibrant paintings, each panel telling a story from Swiss history and mythology. The trusses, supporting the bridge's weight, are intricately carved and add to the overall charm of this architectural marvel. Sadly, two-thirds of these precious interior paintings were lost in a devastating fire in 1993. The cause of the fire remains unknown, but the loss was a significant blow to the cultural heritage of Lucerne. Despite this tragedy, efforts have been made to restore the bridge to its former glory, with some of the original paintings being carefully preserved and new ones being added.
