EDITORS COMMENTS
King Alfonso II of Aragon, also known as Alfonso the Chaste (1154-1196), is depicted in this stunning 19th century engraving from Spain Illustrated History. Born in Saragossa, Alfonso rose to the throne at the tender age of 13 following the death of his father, Ramon Berenguer IV. During his reign, Alfonso worked diligently to expand the Kingdom of Aragon, which at the time included the regions of Aragon, Catalonia, and the County of Barcelona. Alfonso is shown here in his regal attire, donning a bearded face, helmet, and armored suit. His strong posture and determined gaze convey his leadership and courage. The castle in the background symbolizes his power and control over his territories. Alfonso earned the nickname 'the Chaste' due to his pious and celibate lifestyle. He was deeply devoted to the Catholic Church and made significant contributions to its growth within his kingdom. Alfonso's reign was marked by peace and prosperity, and he is remembered fondly in Spanish history for his wisdom, justice, and military prowess. This engraving, colored in the 19th century, offers a glimpse into the medieval world and the life of a powerful and revered monarch. The intricate details of Alfonso's armor and the imposing castle in the background highlight the skill and artistry of the engraver. This image is a testament to the rich history and cultural heritage of Spain during the Middle Ages.
