EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite 15th century wooden sculpture depicts King Eric IX of Sweden, also known as Saint Erik or Saint Eric, who ruled from approximately 1120 to 1160. The sculpture, which is currently housed in the Medieval Museum in Stockholm, Sweden, is believed to have originated from Alsike Church. King Eric is considered a national hero and patron saint of Sweden. He is best known for his role as a lawgiver, who introduced the Christian Holy Law to Sweden and established the first permanent city, Sigtuna, as a center for trade and culture. Eric's reign marked a significant turning point in Swedish history, as it laid the foundation for the centralized monarchy and the spread of Christianity throughout the country. The wooden sculpture captures the regal presence of the king, who is depicted wearing a crown and holding a scepter in his right hand, while his left hand rests on a book, symbolizing his role as a lawgiver. The intricate details of the sculpture, including the textured clothing and the expressive face, showcase the skill and artistry of the medieval craftsman. Despite the passage of time, the wooden sculpture of King Eric IX remains an enduring symbol of Sweden's rich history and cultural heritage. It serves as a reminder of the important role that monarchs played in shaping the political and religious landscape of medieval Europe, and the enduring influence of the Christian faith on Swedish society.
