EDITORS COMMENTS
King Leopold III of Belgium and his Swedish-born wife, Queen Astrid, are seen here with their three young children: Princess Joséphine-Charlotte, Prince Baudouin, and Prince Albert. The photo captures a tender moment of family bliss, as the royal couple gazes at their offspring with love and pride. King Leopold III, dressed in a formal suit, sits confidently in a chair, while Queen Astrid, wearing a elegant dress and pearls, cradles Joséphine-Charlotte on her lap. Baudouin and Albert, dressed in matching sailor suits, stand playfully beside their mother. The family's joyful expressions and the warm lighting of the room create an inviting and intimate atmosphere. Born in 1901, Leopold became King of the Belgians in 1934, succeeding his father, Albert I. He married Astrid, the eldest daughter of Swedish King Gustaf V and Queen Victoria of Baden, in 1926. Their marriage was seen as a symbol of unity between Belgium and Sweden. Together, they had four children: Joséphine-Charlotte, Baudouin, Albert, and a stillborn son, Laurent. The family's happiness was short-lived, however, as Leopold's reign was marked by political turmoil and controversy. He was forced to abdicate in 1951, following the country's constitutional crisis. Astrid and their children went into exile in Switzerland, where she tragically died in a car accident in 1935. Leopold later remarried and had two more children. This beautiful portrait, taken in the late 1930s, offers a glimpse into the happier times of the Belgian royal family, and serves as a poignant reminder of the love and devotion shared between King Leopold III and Queen Astrid.
