1701 1762 1785 Jesuits Magistrate Notable Rene

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative portrait captures the stern and resolute visage of Louis Rene de Caradeuc de La Chalotais (1701-1785), a French magistrate and notable figure in the history of the 18th century for his unwavering opposition to the Jesuit Order. Born into a noble Breton family, La Chalotais began his legal career in Rennes before rising to prominence in Paris, where he became a member of the Parlement of Paris, the highest judicial body in the Kingdom of France. However, it was his role as Intendant of Brittany, a position he held from 1755 to 1762, that brought him into direct conflict with the Jesuits. In 1762, La Chalotais issued an edict expelling the Jesuits from Brittany, citing their refusal to take an oath of allegiance to the King as the reason for their expulsion. This decision was a bold move, as the Jesuits were a powerful and influential order with many supporters among the French nobility and clergy. Despite facing fierce opposition, La Chalotais remained steadfast in his convictions, and his actions set a precedent for the expulsion of the Jesuits from France in 1764. This portrait, with its solemn expression and serious gaze, conveys the determination and resolve of a man who was not afraid to challenge the powerful and entrenched interests of his time. The date of the portrait is not known, but it is believed to have been painted during La Chalotais' tenure in Brittany, making it a fitting representation of a man who played a significant role in shaping the religious and political landscape of 18th-century France.
