EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures Lady Hazel Lavery, born Hazel Martyn, on the left, in a candid moment of her daily life. Lady Lavery, an accomplished artist in her own right, was married to the renowned Irish painter John Lavery (1856-1941). The image on the right, however, showcases how the world came to know Lady Lavery - as the enchanting figure depicted on the Irish banknotes issued by the Republic of Ireland in 1928. Born in County Down, Northern Ireland, in 1880, Hazel Martyn met her future husband, John Lavery, in London in the late 1890s. They married in 1901 and moved to Paris, where they became part of the vibrant artistic community. Lady Lavery's artistic talent was evident from an early age, and she continued to paint throughout her life, often collaborating with her husband on various projects. The Irish Free State, established in 1922, sought to create a new national identity, and Lady Lavery's image was chosen to represent the new currency. The portrait on the right, painted by John Lavery in 1927, was used for the design of the Irish £1 note. The serene and elegant depiction of Lady Lavery embodied the spirit of the new nation, and her image became a symbol of Irish pride and identity. This photograph offers a rare glimpse into the life of a remarkable woman, whose artistic talent and partnership with her husband left an indelible mark on Irish art and history.
