Amherst Breeds Florence Saluki 1925 Salukis

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken in 1925, showcases the Hon. Florence Amherst in the elegant drawing room of her English estate, surrounded by the regal presence of her two Saluki dogs, Ch. Zobeid and Farhan. Florence Amherst (1873-1953), an accomplished British aristocrat and breeder, was renowned for her dedication to the Saluki breed, which traces its origins back to ancient Egypt. The Hon. Lady Amherst's love for Salukis began during her travels in the Middle East, where she was captivated by the sleek, graceful dogs that roamed the desert sands. She brought back several of these magnificent animals to England and began breeding them at her estate, becoming one of the most influential figures in the Saluki breed's history. In this photograph, Florence Amherst is seen seated on a plush velvet chair, dressed in an elegant gown and adorned with pearls. Her two Saluki dogs, Ch. Zobeid and Farhan, lie at her feet, their coats glistening in the soft light that filters in through the window. Ch. Zobeid, the larger of the two, rests his head on the lady's lap, while Farhan gazes up at her with unwavering loyalty. The Saluki breed, also known as the Persian Greyhound, is known for its slender, elegant build and distinctive feathered ears. Originally bred for hunting, these dogs were prized for their speed, agility, and endurance. Today, they are cherished as loyal companions and are recognized by the American Kennel Club and the United Kennel Club. This photograph not only captures the beauty and elegance of the Hon. Florence Amherst and her beloved Salukis but also provides a glimpse into the rich history of these ancient dogs and the woman who dedicated her life to preserving their legacy.
