A lady in Traditional Bernaise costume posing with a bear

A lady of Bern, Switzerland in Traditional Bernaise costume posing with a bear, the symbol of both the city and surrounding canton of Bern, Switzerland, and is featured in their coat of arms. The founding legend has it that Duke Berthold V of Zahringen vowed to choose as namesake for Bern the first animal his hunt met in the wood that was to be chopped down for the new city, which turned out to be a black bear. EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph, a graceful woman dressed in traditional Bernese costume poses proudly with a majestic bear. The scene unfolds against the backdrop of the picturesque city of Bern, Switzerland, a place steeped in history and rich cultural heritage. The lady's elegant brown dress, adorned with intricate embroidery and lace, is a testament to the region's long-standing traditions. The bear, a powerful and symbolic creature, is an integral part of Bern's identity. According to legend, Duke Berthold V of Zahringen, the founder of Bern in 1091, vowed to name the new city after the first animal he encountered in the forest that was to be cleared for its construction. True to his word, the duke came across a black bear, which became the namesake and emblem of both the city and the surrounding canton. The friendly interaction between the woman and the bear in this photograph highlights the deep connection between the people of Bern and their cherished symbol. The bear, with its piercing gaze and regal posture, seems to acknowledge the lady's respect and admiration. This enchanting image offers a glimpse into the past, transporting us to a time when nature, tradition, and community were deeply intertwined. Circa 1910.
