EDITORS COMMENTS
Plate 39" of William MacGillivray's "Watercolour Drawings of British Animals" (1831-1841) features a stunning and intricately detailed illustration of the Opah, scientifically known as Lampris guttatus. This magnificent fish, also referred to as the moonfish or Jerusalem haddock, is a member of the Lampriformes order, characterized by their large, round, and flattened bodies. The Opah in this illustration is depicted in a side view, revealing its unique anatomy. Its long, slender, and blue-tinged body is adorned with a series of darker blue vertical stripes, which contrast beautifully with its silvery-white underbelly. The most striking feature of the Opah is its large, circular, and prominent eye, which is positioned on the upper part of its body, giving it an otherworldly appearance. Its large, wide-opening mouth, filled with small, sharp teeth, is also clearly visible. The Opah is a ray-finned bony fish, belonging to the class Actinopterygii and the superorder Osteichthyes. It is a solitary and deep-dwelling fish, found in tropical and subtropical waters around the world. This illustration provides a fascinating glimpse into the anatomy and appearance of this remarkable and little-understood species, which was a subject of great interest to naturalists and scientists of the 19th century. MacGillivray's meticulous and lifelike rendering of the Opah remains an enduring testament to the beauty and diversity of the natural world.
