EDITORS COMMENTS
This poignant photograph captures the unwavering courage and determination of Lance-Corporal Wilfred Dolby Fuller, a hero of the British Army during the First World War. Born on 28th July 1893, Fuller enlisted in the Grenadier Guards, one of the most esteemed regiments in the British military. On 13th March 1915, during the Battle of Neuve Chapelle, Fuller displayed extraordinary bravery that would earn him the highest military decoration, the Victoria Cross (VC). As the British forces advanced against the German trenches, Fuller's company was pinned down by heavy machine gun fire. Seeing the predicament, Fuller, without hesitation, single-handedly charged towards the enemy position, neutralizing the machine gun nest with grenades and bayonet. His actions allowed his comrades to regroup and continue the assault. The photograph shows Fuller in his Grenadier Guards uniform, wearing the distinctive bearskin hat and carrying his rifle. His steely gaze and resolute expression convey the unyielding spirit of a man who put duty and country above all else. The VC ribbon pinned to his left chest serves as a testament to his unparalleled bravery and self-sacrifice. Lance-Corporal Fuller's heroic actions at the Battle of Neuve Chapelle are a reminder of the extraordinary courage and resilience displayed by ordinary soldiers during the First World War. His story continues to inspire and captivate us, as we remember the sacrifices made by the brave men and women who served in the armed forces.
