1896 Franco Landing Madagascar Resident Hova

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures the historic moment of the first Resident General's landing in Madagascar after the second Franco-Hova War in 1896. The Resident General, represented here by French officer Jean-Marie Laurent Ferrié, stepped foot on Malagasy soil marking the formal beginning of French colonial rule over the island nation. The second Franco-Hova War, also known as the Madagascar Expedition, was a decisive military campaign that lasted from 1894 to 1896. It followed the failed attempt of the French to establish a protectorate in 1883, which was met with fierce resistance from the Malagasy people, led by Queen Ranavalona II and her prime minister Rainivoninahitriniony. The war resulted in the defeat of the Malagasy forces and the eventual surrender of Queen Ranavalona II. The French colonial administration was then established, with the Resident General serving as the highest representative of the French government. This period marked the beginning of a long and complex relationship between France and Madagascar, which lasted until the country's independence in 1960. The image shows the Resident General and his entourage disembarking from a French warship, surrounded by a crowd of Malagasy people. The scene is filled with a sense of anticipation and uncertainty, as the Malagasy people looked on at the arrival of their new rulers. The French flag is raised on the shore, symbolizing the start of a new era in Madagascar's history. The photograph is a poignant reminder of the profound impact of colonialism on the island nation and its people.
