Governor

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, dating back to August 31, 1883, features L.G. Kinne, who would go on to become the next governor of Iowa. The image captures Kinne in a formal setting, wearing a suit and sitting in an ornate chair, exuding an air of confidence and authority. At the time of this photograph, Kinne was already an established political figure in Iowa, having served in the state legislature and as the Speaker of the House. Born on a farm in Decatur County in 1832, Kinne's humble beginnings belied his eventual rise to political power. He attended the University of Iowa and went on to study law, eventually settling in Mount Pleasant and beginning his legal practice. Kinne's political career took off in the late 1860s, and he quickly rose through the ranks, becoming a prominent figure in the Republican Party. As governor, Kinne faced numerous challenges, including economic instability and political unrest. However, he was known for his strong leadership and ability to bring people together. During his tenure, he worked to improve the state's infrastructure, including the construction of new schools and the expansion of the state university. He also advocated for women's suffrage and was a vocal supporter of civil rights for African Americans. Despite his many accomplishments, Kinne's term as governor was not without controversy. He was embroiled in a scandal involving the sale of state lands, which led to his resignation in 1887. However, his legacy endures, and he is remembered as a visionary leader who helped shape the future of Iowa. This photograph, taken just before his election, offers a glimpse into the man behind the politician, capturing a moment in history that continues to resonate today.
