EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures a significant moment in the Liberation of Europe during World War II, as the first women of the Queen Alexandra's Imperial Military Nursing Service (QAIMNS) arrive on the Normandy beachhead on June 13, 1944, seven days after the initial Allied Expeditionary Forces landings. Lt. Col. Helm, accompanied by Sisters Ridgers, Mackay Causon, and Bjorkman, were tasked with establishing a general hospital to accommodate 600 patients. With the assistance of Pioneers and the Royal Army Medical Corps (R.A.M.C.), they quickly set up the hospital, which is now functioning effectively. This image shows Sister Ridgers unpacking supplies, marking the beginning of the provision of medical care for the wounded soldiers on the front lines. This photograph is one of 37 British Official photographs, issued in July 1944, covering the preparations for and liberation of North West Europe, including the D-Day landings in 1944 and the Rhine Crossings in 1945. The photograph is mounted on card with the original associated typescript captions and is protected by Crown Copyright Reserved.
