EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the young and determined face of 2nd Lieutenant Angus M. Richardson, elder son of the renowned dog trainer and commandant of the British War Dog School during World War I, Lieut-Col. Edwin Hautenville Richardson. Angus, who received his education at Harrow and Sandhurst, proudly wears the tartan kilt and uniform of the 2nd Gordon Highlanders. The image was likely taken around 1914, before Angus was sent to the battlefield. Sadly, Angus' military career was cut short when he was killed in action at the Battle of Loos in September 1915. The Battle of Loos was one of the largest battles fought by the British during the war, and it resulted in heavy casualties for both sides. Angus' tragic death at such a young age is a poignant reminder of the human cost of the conflict. Lieut-Col. Richardson was a highly respected figure in the military and animal training communities. He was instrumental in the formation and training of the British War Dog School, which played a crucial role in the war effort by providing trained dogs to the military for various tasks, including carrying messages, locating wounded soldiers, and detecting enemy mines. Angus' legacy lives on through his family's proud military and canine traditions. This photograph serves as a poignant tribute to a young soldier who gave his life in the service of his country during the First World War.
