EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative photograph taken in the 1910s, the 2nd Lifeguards and their brass band proudly march down Upper Albany Street in North West London. The military unit, clad in their distinctive uniforms, move in formation, their steps in time with the lively music produced by the brass band. The scene is set against a backdrop of misty, hazy air, suggesting a sense of nostalgia and a bygone era. The pavement on the right side of the street is filled with onlookers, their faces expressionless as they watch the procession pass by. The road, lined with shops and buildings, is mostly empty, save for a few horse-drawn carts and a lone car, which can be seen parked in front of Friswell's car showroom on the left. The showroom, with its large display windows and ornate signage, stands out amongst the otherwise unassuming buildings. Despite the grandeur of the military display, the photograph also reveals signs of the early 20th century urban environment. The air, thick with pollution, is evident in the hazy atmosphere that envelops the scene. The presence of the car, a symbol of modernity, underscores the contrast between the old and the new, the traditional and the progressive. This photograph offers a glimpse into the past, capturing a moment in time when military displays were a common sight on the streets of London, and the automobile was a novelty. It is a poignant reminder of the rich history and cultural traditions that have shaped the city we know today.
