Lloyd Georges Maternity Insurance Benefit

In the early twentieth century a free National Health Service did not yet exist and the poor could not usually afford medical services. To help address this, the Liberal Government under David Lloyd George introduced the National Insurance Act in 1911. This included maternity benefit of 30 shillings (1.50), as illustrated here in this surprisingly positive political postcard! Date: 1911

EDITORS COMMENTS
This political postcard from 1911 celebrates a significant milestone in British social welfare history: the introduction of Lloyd George's National Insurance Act, which included maternity benefit for expectant mothers. In an era when a national health service was yet to be established and medical expenses were often a financial burden for the working class, this reform was a welcome relief. The image on the postcard depicts a contented couple, with the expectant mother cradling her swollen belly, surrounded by symbols of new life and prosperity. The caption reads, "National Insurance Act 1911 - Maternity Benefit 30 Shillings," highlighting the financial assistance provided to new mothers. This act, spearheaded by Liberal Party leader David Lloyd George, marked a crucial step towards social security and welfare in the United Kingdom. The postcard's positive tone reflects the optimism and hope that this reform brought to many families, providing a safety net during a vulnerable and transformative time in their lives.
