GLC-LFB - Dormitory of the new Barbican fire station

Opened in 1965, the Barbican fire station replaced the former Redcross Street and Bishopsgate fire stations. Seen here is the new purpose built dormitory. In the older London stations dormitories did not exist, but beds would be put down at night in any available space around the station

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph, taken in 1965, showcases the newly opened dormitory at the Barbican Fire Station in London, operated by the Greater London Council's London Fire Brigade. Replacing the outdated Redcross Street and Bishopsgate fire stations, the Barbican Fire Station was a purpose-built facility designed to provide modern and efficient firefighting services to the city. Prior to the construction of the Barbican Fire Station, dormitories were non-existent in older London fire stations. Instead, firefighters would make do with whatever space they could find to rest in, often setting up their beds in the station itself once their shifts had ended. However, with the opening of the Barbican Fire Station, firefighters were finally provided with dedicated sleeping quarters. The interior of the dormitory is seen here, with rows of neatly made beds lining the walls. The minimalist design and functional furnishings reflect the utilitarian nature of the space, which was designed with the sole purpose of providing comfortable and effective accommodation for the firefighters. The use of natural light and open windows adds to the sense of calm and restfulness, creating an environment conducive to a good night's sleep after a long and demanding shift. This photograph is a poignant reminder of the important role that fire stations play in our communities, and the essential facilities and accommodations that are required to support the brave men and women who risk their lives to keep us safe. The Barbican Fire Station, with its modern facilities and purpose-built dormitory, represented a significant step forward in the provision of firefighting services in London during the 1960s.
