EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the GLC-LFB Eastern Command Major Control Unit, an essential component of the London Fire Brigade established on 1st April 1965. The enlarged London Fire Brigade absorbed various types of fire engines, and a series of photos was commissioned to document each appliance. The Brigade was divided into three Command areas: Northern, Eastern, and Southern, each with a Command Headquarters. The Eastern Command Major Control Unit was stationed at Lambeth, Brigade HQ, in addition to the one depicted in this image. The Major Control Unit played a crucial role in managing and coordinating firefighting operations within the Eastern Command area. This photograph showcases a GLC-LFB appliance, likely a fire engine or a lorry, parked outside the control unit. The service vehicles and appliances were essential for responding to emergencies and providing transport and support for firefighters. The 1960s was an era of significant change for the London Fire Brigade, as it transitioned from the Greater London Council Fire Brigade to the London Fire and Civil Defence Service, and eventually to the London Fire Brigade as we know it today. This photograph offers a glimpse into the history of the London Fire Brigade during this period, showcasing the vehicles, engines, and appliances that were instrumental in protecting the city. The Major Control Unit was a central hub for communication, coordination, and dispatch of resources during emergencies. The unit's staff worked tirelessly to ensure that firefighters were deployed efficiently and effectively to tackle fires and other emergencies. This photograph is a testament to the important role that the Major Control Unit played in the London Fire Brigade's operations during the 1960s.
