LCC-LFB Wapping fire station, East London

Wapping fire station was only operational for 15 years. Located in Red Lion Street, Tench Street E1, it was opened in 1905. However, the adoption of motorised fire engines by the LFB led to a reduction in the number of stations required. A report produced in 1920 recommended the closure of 15 stations, including Wapping

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases the historic Wapping Fire Station, located at the corner of Red Lion Street and Tench Street in East London, which operated under the London County Council (LCC) Fire Brigade between 1905 and 1920. The Edwardian-era building, with its distinctive red brick facade and large, ornate sign, once housed firefighting equipment and personnel dedicated to protecting the local community from fires. The LCC Fire Brigade, which preceded the London Fire Brigade, was established in 1865 and underwent significant expansion in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. However, the adoption of motorised fire engines in the aftermath of World War I led to a reduction in the number of stations required. A report produced in 1920 recommended the closure of 15 stations, including Wapping, due to the increased efficiency and mobility offered by motorised engines. Despite its relatively short operational life of just 15 years, the Wapping Fire Station played an essential role in the protection of the local community during its time of service. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the history and importance of firefighting in London's past, and the continuous evolution of the fire service to meet the changing needs of the city.
