Baume Blanc Duchesse Louise Mistress Valliere

EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite 17th-century portrait captures the enchanting beauty and grace of Louise de La Vallière, the beloved mistress of King Louis XIV of France. Born Marie-Angélique de La Fayette in 1644, she later became known as Louise de La Vallière when she entered the Dames de la Visitation convent in 1658, taking the name Sister Louise de la Vallière. Her life took an unexpected turn when she met the young and dashing King Louis XIV in 1661, who was then only 22 years old. The two began an affair that lasted for several years, during which time Louise bore the king three children. Despite the scandal and opposition from the court, the king continued to favor Louise, granting her the title of Duchess of La Vallière and bestowing numerous gifts upon her. In 1667, however, Louis became infatuated with Madame de Montespan, and Louise was banished from the court. She spent the remainder of her life in religious seclusion, eventually becoming the prioress of the convent of Poissy. This stunning portrait, likely painted around the time of her affair with the king, showcases Louise's captivating beauty and refined elegance. Her delicate features, expressive eyes, and graceful posture all convey a sense of grace and sophistication that belies the tumultuous events of her life. The intricately detailed costume, with its lace collar, voluminous sleeves, and ornate headdress, further emphasizes her regal status and the opulence of the era. Louise de La Vallière's story is a fascinating glimpse into the courtly intrigues and passions of the French monarchy during the 17th century. Her enduring legacy as the king's mistress and the mother of his children continues to captivate historians and enthusiasts of French history and culture.
