He rose to command his battalion with rank of Lt. Col. Edgar was killed in battle, in July 1917, at Zillebeke during the Third Battle of Ypres (Passchendaele), whilst attacking a machine gun post. His body has never been found, so his name is on the Menin Gate memorial. In 1921 the first Mobbs Memorial Match was held between the East Midlands and the Barbarians at Franklins Gardens and has continued ever since. Date: 1916

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the determined and resolute gaze of Lt. Col. Edgar R. Mobbs, D.S.O. (1882-1917), an English rugby union footballer of exceptional talent. A three-quarter for Northampton R.F.C. and England, Mobbs is best remembered for his leadership both on and off the pitch. Initially rejected from the army due to his age at the outbreak of World War 1, Mobbs' passion for sport and his sense of duty led him to raise his own "sportsmen's" battalion for the Northamptonshire regiment, named "Mobbs Own." Rising through the ranks with distinction, he eventually commanded his battalion as a Lieutenant Colonel. Tragically, Mobbs was killed in action during the Third Battle of Ypres (Passchendaele) in July 1917, while leading his men in an attack against a machine gun post. His body was never found, and his name is immortalized on the Menin Gate memorial. The first Mobbs Memorial Match was held in his honor in 1921, pitting the East Midlands against the Barbarians at Franklin Gardens. This annual tradition continues to this day, a poignant reminder of the indelible impact of this remarkable sportsman and soldier.
