1813 1896 Judge Lyman Senator Trumbull

EDITORS COMMENTS
1. Title: Lyman Trumbull, Prominent American Statesman, Judge, and Senator (1813-1896). This portrait captures the distinguished visage of Lyman Trumbull, an influential American statesman, judge, and senator, born on February 10, 1813, and passing away on December 27, 1896. Trumbull's political career spanned over four decades, during which he played a pivotal role in shaping the nation's history. Born in Massachusetts, Trumbull moved to Illinois in 1834 and was admitted to the bar in 1836. He quickly established himself as a respected lawyer and entered politics, serving as a member of the Illinois House of Representatives from 1836 to 1838. In 1840, Trumbull was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, representing Illinois' 11th district. Trumbull's most significant contributions came during his tenure in the U.S. Senate, where he served from 1849 to 1855 and again from 1856 to 1859. During the 1850s, Trumbull was a key figure in the passage of the Kansas-Nebraska Act, which allowed the residents of those territories to decide whether to allow slavery within their borders. Trumbull, an opponent of slavery, later helped draft the 13th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which abolished slavery. Trumbull's judicial career began in 1853 when he was appointed to the U.S. District Court for the District of Illinois. He served in this role until 1857, when he was appointed to the U.S. Supreme Court. Trumbull's tenure on the Supreme Court was brief, as he resigned in 1859 to return to the Senate. This photograph is a testament to the remarkable life and career of Lyman Trumbull, a man who dedicated himself to the service of his country and left an indelible mark on American history.
