EDITORS COMMENTS
Major-General Zachary Taylor: The Soldier-Statesman Who Became America's 12th President This striking full-length portrait captures Major-General Zachary Taylor, who would later become the 12th President of the United States, standing confidently beside his horse. The image, estimated to have been created around 1848, showcases Taylor's military prowess and distinguished career. Born on November 24, 1784, in Barboursville, Virginia, Taylor rose through the ranks of the United States Army, serving in the War of 1812 and the Mexican-American War. His military successes earned him the nickname 'Old Rough and Ready.' Taylor's reputation as a capable military leader and his popularity among the common soldiery paved the way for his political ascent. In the 1848 presidential election, Taylor, a Whig Party nominee, ran against the Democratic Party's Lewis Cass. Despite having no prior political experience, Taylor's military background and reputation for honesty resonated with the American people. He won the election in a landslide, becoming the first president to be elected without prior political experience. Taylor's presidency was cut short when he fell ill after only 16 months in office. He died on July 9, 1850, leaving a legacy as a soldier-statesman who bridged the gap between the eras of Andrew Jackson and Abraham Lincoln. This portrait, with its depiction of a strong and capable leader, serves as a testament to Taylor's enduring impact on American history.
