EDITORS COMMENTS
September 1913: Makedonia, a region in the Balkans now divided between modern-day Greece, North Macedonia, and Bulgaria, was a hotbed of conflict during the Balkan Wars. In this poignant photograph from the Mary Evans Picture Library, the inhabitants of Gumurdjina, a town in what was then part of the Ottoman Empire but was annexed by Bulgaria in the Second Balkan War, are seen driving out the occupying Bulgarians. The image captures the determination and resilience of the Macedonian people, who saw the Bulgarians as invaders and perceived the annexation as a threat to their cultural identity. The men, women, and even children in the photograph are shown carrying various makeshift weapons and supplies as they march forward, their faces etched with determination and resolve. The photograph is a powerful reminder of the turbulent history of the Balkans and the struggles of its people during a time of war and political upheaval." "The Second Balkan War, which lasted from June to December 1913, was a conflict between the Balkan League and Bulgaria over the division of the territories won during the First Balkan War. The war resulted in significant territorial changes, with Bulgaria losing territory to Greece, Serbia, and Romania. The region of Macedonia, which had a diverse population with strong cultural and linguistic ties to both Bulgaria and Greece, became a focal point of the conflict. The photograph of the drive out of the Bulgarians from Gumurdjina is a testament to the complex and often contentious history of the Balkans and the struggles of its people during a time of war and political upheaval.
