EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite handcolored copperplate stipple engraving is an elegant representation of three distinct bird species from the natural world, as depicted in Dumont de Sainte-Croix's Dictionary of Natural Science: Ornithology. The central figure is a Mallard duck, Anas platyrhynchos, with its distinctive green head and chestnut-brown body. To the left, the vibrant plumage of the Red-breasted Scrubfowl (Megapodius reinwardt), also known as the Orange-footed Scrubfowl, is on full display. Its bright orange legs contrast sharply with its black and white speckled body and red breast. To the right, the Cape Francolin (Pternistis capensis) is depicted with its brown and grey feathers, accentuated by the intricate stipple engraving technique. The illustration was created by the skilled hand of Jean Gabriel Pretre (1780-1845), a painter of natural history at Empress Josephine's zoo and later becoming the artist to the Museum of Natural History in Paris. The meticulous engraving was executed by Massard, under the direction of Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin, and published by F.G. Levrault. This image is a testament to the intricate detail and artistry of 19th century ornithological illustrations. The engraving showcases the dedication and passion of naturalists and artists during this era, who sought to document and preserve the natural world for future generations.
