A Man of Ticino re-fills his water bottle - Switzerland

A Man of Ticino re-fills his water bottle - Switzerland. Canton Ticino or just Ticino is the southernmost canton of Switzerland. The written language is Italian in almost the entire canton (except the Walser municipality of Bosco Gurin, where it is German). It surrounds the Italian exclave of Campione d Italia. Together with areas of the canton of Graubit makes up the so-called Svizzera Italiana (Italian Switzerland). The elderly gentleman is in traditional costume, with a large woven reed basket on his back, ready to be filled with harvested foliage. Date: circa 1910s

EDITORS COMMENTS
A Man of Ticino: Re-Filling His Water Bottle in the 1910s, Switzerland This evocative photograph captures a moment in time from the early 1900s in the southernmost canton of Switzerland, Ticino. Known as the Italian Switzerland, Ticino is a region steeped in history and tradition, where the predominant language is Italian, except in the Walser municipality of Bosco Gurin, where it is German. The elderly gentleman in this image is dressed in the traditional costume of the region, complete with a large woven reed basket on his back, ready to be filled with harvested foliage. The man stops at a public fountain to re-fill his water bottle, a common practice in a time before modern conveniences. The atmospheric light and glass-like reflections in the water add to the serene and peaceful scene. The man carries the basket on his back, balanced with the weight of the basket and the water, as he continues on his journey. The image is reminiscent of a bygone era, when life was simpler, and the connection to nature was more profound. The canton of Ticino, with its rich history and cultural diversity, offers a unique perspective on Switzerland. This photograph is a testament to the region's past, and the resilience and resourcefulness of its people. It is a reminder of the importance of preserving traditions and the beauty of the natural world.
