EDITORS COMMENTS
Manco Capac, the legendary founder of the Inca Empire, is depicted in this vertical engraving from the "Allgemeine Historie der Reisen zu Wasser und zu Lande" (General History of travel by land and sea) published by Johann Joachim Schwabe between 1757 and 1759. The image shows Manco Capac ordering the construction of the city of Cuzco, which would later become the capital of the vast Inca Empire. The mythological figure is shown with a regal bearing, dressed in traditional attire and holding a staff or scepter in one hand and a map or plan of the city in the other. The city of Cuzco, nestled in the Andes Mountains, is depicted in the background, with workers and builders constructing its iconic walls and buildings. This illustration reflects the European fascination with the New World and its indigenous peoples, and the desire to document and record the myths and legends that surrounded them. The Inca Empire, which thrived from approximately 1200 to 1533, is considered one of the greatest civilizations in pre-Columbian America, known for its advanced agriculture, engineering, and social organization. This engraving, with its intricate details and bold lines, is a testament to the enduring power of myth and legend in shaping our understanding of history and culture.
