EDITORS COMMENTS
This historic marriage certificate marks the union of Princess Elizabeth Alexandra Mary Windsor and Prince Philip of Edinburgh, which took place on November 20, 1947, at the revered Westminster Abbey in London. The young Princess Elizabeth, later to become Queen Elizabeth II, and her groom, Prince Philip of Greece and Denmark, were surrounded by a grand assembly of witnesses, including members of the British and Greek royal families, as they exchanged their vows in an Anglican ceremony. The certificate bears the elegant handwriting of the Archbishop of Canterbury, who officiated the wedding, and features the signatures of numerous witnesses, including King George VI and Queen Elizabeth, the Duke of Windsor, King Constantine I of Greece, and Prince Philip's uncle, Lord Louis Mountbatten. Notable witnesses also include Princess Marina, Princess Alice of Battenberg, and various dukes, earls, and lords. Prince Philip, who would later be titled the Duke of Edinburgh, brought a unique background to the royal family, having served in the British and Greek navies and spent time in Burma during World War II. The marriage certificate is a testament to the union of two remarkable individuals and the beginning of a lifelong partnership that would shape the course of British history. The intricate design of the certificate, with its ornate borders and official seals, reflects the grandeur and tradition of the royal wedding. The document is a precious piece of history, showcasing the special connection between the couple and the important role their families and the Church played in their union.
