EDITORS COMMENTS
The Mausoleum at Halicarnassus, built between 353-350 BC in present-day Turkey, stands as a testament to the grandeur and power of Mausolus, a satrap in the Persian Empire, and his queen, Artemisia II of Caria. This ancient structure, located in the city of Halicarnassus, is considered one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. The tomb, designed by the renowned Greek sculptor Satyros and decorated with reliefs by Scopas, showcases intricate bas-reliefs depicting various scenes from mythology and history. One such relief, now housed in the British Museum in London, illustrates the Combat with the Amazons. The scene displays Mausolus, dressed as a warrior, engaged in battle with Amazonian women. The Amazons, legendary warrior-women, were said to have lived in the region of Themiscyra, located near the Black Sea. According to Greek mythology, they were led by their queen, Hippolyta, and were known for their fierce independence and warrior spirit. The relief at the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus depicts Mausolus and the Amazons in the midst of an intense battle. The detailed bas-relief captures the raw energy and power of the combatants, with Mausolus striking a powerful pose as he engages in hand-to-hand combat with an Amazonian warrior. The relief also shows other Amazons attacking soldiers and chariots, adding to the chaos and intensity of the scene. The combat with the Amazons relief is a prime example of the high-quality craftsmanship and artistic style of the time, showcasing the intricate details and lifelike depiction of the human form. The relief, along with the other decorative elements of the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus, demonstrates the cultural and historical significance of this ancient structure and the powerful rulers it honors.
