1542 1578 Flemish Grave Hennin Holder Maximilian Stadt

EDITORS COMMENTS
Maximilian de Hennin, Count of Boussu (1542-1578), was a prominent Flemish statesman and military leader of the late 16th century. Born into the noble Hennin family, Maximilian rose to prominence through his service to the Habsburg monarchs, Philip II of Spain and his son, Don Juan of Austria. In this striking portrait, Maximilian is depicted in the regal attire of a territorial ruler, wearing a richly embroidered doublet and a fur-trimmed cloak. The grave expression on his face and the seriousness of his gaze convey a sense of authority and determination. The background features the coat of arms of the Counts of Boussu, with the motto "Fortunae et Virtuti" (To Fortune and Virtue), emphasizing Maximilian's belief in the importance of both luck and personal strength in achieving success. Maximilian held various important positions in the Habsburg Netherlands, including stadtholder (governor) over Holland, West-Vriesland, and Utrecht. He played a crucial role in the defense of the Netherlands against the rebellious forces of the Duke of Alva and the Spanish Army during the Dutch Revolt. Despite his loyalty to the Habsburg cause, Maximilian was eventually captured and executed by the rebels in 1578. This impressive portrait of Maximilian de Hennin, Count of Boussu, offers a glimpse into the political and military landscape of the late 16th century in the Netherlands and highlights the complexities of the power struggles that shaped the region during this tumultuous period.
