EDITORS COMMENTS
May 'Toupie' Lowther: A Pioneering Sportswoman of the Late 19th Century This image features May Toupie Lowther, an English tennis player and fencer, as she graced the front cover of The Sketch magazine in 1898. Lowther was a remarkable woman who defied societal norms by excelling in traditionally male-dominated sports and pursuits. Born in the late 19th century, Lowther was not only an outstanding fencer but also a keen motorist, weightlifter, and practitioner of jujitsu. Her athletic prowess and fearless spirit earned her recognition and admiration during a time when women's participation in sports was still uncommon. In this photograph, Lowther is depicted in her fencing outfit, holding a foil, and challenging a Captain Hutton to a duel. The audacity of her actions was a testament to her confidence and determination, making headlines and inspiring many women to pursue their passions despite societal expectations. Lowther's groundbreaking achievements paved the way for future generations of female athletes and continue to inspire us today. Her story serves as a reminder that the boundaries of what is possible are constantly being pushed, and that determination, courage, and a love for sport can lead to great things.
