McClintock's distinguished military career began in the Royal Navy in 1833, and he quickly rose through the ranks, earning the title of Sir in 1883. McClintock's most notable achievement came in 1857 when he led an expedition to search for the lost Franklin Expedition, which had disappeared in the Arctic in 1845.
