On the left is Rosemary Kennedy (1918 - 2005), in the middle Rose Kennedy and on the right, Kathleen Kick Kennedy. Kathleen met Billy Cavendish, heir to the Devonshire dukedom during the Season and married him becoming Marchioness of Hartington. He was killed during World War II and Kathleen herself was killed in a plane crash in 1948. Rosemary, or Rosie, was deemed mentally retarded and was subjected to a frontal lobotomy at the age of 23. She spent much of her life in and out of asylums. Date: 1938

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this elegant photograph, Mrs. Joseph P. Kennedy, the charismatic and influential matriarch of the Kennedy family, is captured with her two eldest daughters, Rosemary Kennedy and Kathleen "Kick" Kennedy, at the first court presentation at Buckingham Palace in May 1938. The Kennedys, who hailed from the United States, were making their debut in London society during the famed English "Season." On the left, Rosemary Kennedy, or "Rosie," is dressed in a beautiful gown with a demure expression. Sadly, her life was marked by tragedy. Diagnosed as mentally retarded, she underwent a controversial frontal lobotomy at the age of 23 and spent much of her life in and out of institutions. In the middle, Mrs. Kennedy, dressed in an exquisite gown, exudes grace and poise. Her presence and influence would continue to shape the Kennedy family's trajectory in American politics. On the right, Kathleen Kennedy, or "Kick," is a vision in her stunning dress. She captured the heart of Billy Cavendish, heir to the Devonshire dukedom, during the Season. Their whirlwind romance led to a marriage in 1934, making Kathleen the Marchioness of Hartington. Tragically, both Kathleen and her husband were killed – Kathleen in a plane crash in 1948, and Billy in World War II. This photograph is a poignant reminder of the Kennedy family's history in London society and the intertwining of their lives with the British aristocracy. The fashions, the elegance, and the stories of these remarkable women continue to captivate us today.
