Confession Document Documents Gun Powder Plot Statement

EDITORS COMMENTS
This historic print depicts the Declaration of Guy Fawkes, also known as the Confession or Statement of Guy Fawkes, made on November 7, 1605, following his arrest along with his fellow conspirators in the Gunpowder Plot. The document, written in Old English script, is displayed prominently in the image, with Guy Fawkes, dressed in a simple smock and wearing a yellow cap, seated before it. The declaration details his involvement in the plot to blow up the House of Lords during the State Opening of Parliament, an attempt to assassinate King James I and overthrow the Protestant government. The document, which is part of the State Papers Domestic Series, SP14, folio 152a, was discovered in the cellar beneath the House of Lords on November 5, 1605, along with 36 barrels of gunpowder. The discovery of the plot and the subsequent confession of Fawkes and his co-conspirators led to a wave of relief and celebration throughout England, and the tradition of Guy Fawkes Night, or Bonfire Night, was established to commemorate the failed assassination attempt. The print, which is part of the extensive collection of historical documents and images at Mary Evans Prints Online, offers a fascinating glimpse into the past and the events that shaped English history. The Declaration of Guy Fawkes is a testament to the importance of primary sources in understanding the past and the role they play in shaping our collective memory and identity.
