John Reilly of Scarva, Co. Down (1715-1804) was an influential Irish politician and Member of Parliament during the late 18th century. This striking oil painting, created by Thomas Pope-Stevens around 1775, captures Reilly in the prime of his political career. Born in Scarva, a town in County Down, Northern Ireland, Reilly rose to prominence through his involvement in local politics and was elected as the Member of Parliament for Armagh City in 1768. He would go on to represent the constituency for over 30 years, becoming a trusted advisor and confidant to successive British monarchs. The painting, which dates from 1775, depicts Reilly in formal attire, with a serious expression and piercing gaze. His dark coat, white cravat, and powdered wig are all typical of the fashionable dress of the time.
