This exquisite detail from a 19th century fresco at the Monastery of Saint John of Rila in Bulgaria's Rila Mountain showcases the Nativity scene, a beloved Christian narrative of the birth of Jesus Christ. The Monastery, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is one of the most significant cultural, historical, and architectural monuments not only in Bulgaria but in Europe. Founded in the 10th century, it was dedicated to Saint John of Rila, the hermit and patron saint of Bulgaria. The Nativity Church, where this fresco is located, is the most recent addition to the complex, built in 1834.
