EDITORS COMMENTS
Nedeljko Cabrinovic: The Unsuccessful Assassin of Archduke Franz Ferdinand (circa 1914) This evocative photograph captures the young and determined face of Nedeljko Cabrinovic, a Serbian nationalist and member of the Young Bosnia movement. The image was likely taken around the year 1914, just prior to the momentous events that would change the course of history. Cabrinjovic is most infamous for his role in the assassination plot against Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria and his wife, Sophie, during their visit to Sarajevo on 28 June 1914. In an attempt to assert Serbian independence and bring an end to Austro-Hungarian rule, Cabrinovic and his fellow conspirators planned to assassinate the Archduke. On that fateful day, as the Archduke's motorcade made its way through the streets of Sarajevo, Cabrinovic, hiding in the crowd, threw a bomb at the vehicle. However, his timing was off, and the bomb exploded prematurely, near a following car. Later that day, Gavrilo Princip, another member of the Young Bosnia movement, successfully assassinated the Archduke and his wife. Cabrinovic was quickly apprehended for his part in the plot and sentenced to 20 years in prison. Tragically, he died of tuberculosis before serving out his full sentence. The assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand and Sophie, the heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne, served as the catalyst for the First World War. The complex web of alliances and tensions that had been building in Europe for decades finally snapped, and the Great War began. This photograph of Nedeljko Cabrinovic, the unsuccessful assassin, stands as a haunting reminder of the chain of events that followed, and the devastating impact they had on the world.
