EDITORS COMMENTS
This Neo-Sumerian diorite statue represents Gudea, the ruler of the ancient Sumerian city-state of Lagash, located in modern-day Telloh, Iraq, around 2120 BC. Gudea is depicted in a seated position, wearing the horned headdress of a Sumerian ruler, with his hands resting on his knees. The statue is inscribed with cuneiform text, detailing Gudea's accomplishments as an architect and town king. He is known for his close relationship with the god Ningirsu, the patron deity of Girsu, and is often referred to as "Ensi," or "the governor." The statue was discovered in Girsu and is now housed in the Louvre Museum in Paris, France. It is a testament to the rich history and cultural achievements of the Neo-Sumerian period, a time of renewed artistic and architectural activity in Mesopotamia. The intricately carved details of the statue, from the folds of Gudea's robe to the delicate inscriptions, showcase the advanced artistic techniques of the time. The statue's historical significance is further emphasized by the discovery of a temple plan tablet inscribed with Gudea's name, which provides insight into the architectural projects he oversaw during his reign. This statue is a reminder of the enduring legacy of the ancient Sumerian civilization and the profound impact it had on the development of human history.
