101st Airborne Division Memorial near Eindhoven

Operation Market Garden involved capturing a sequence of bridges over rivers so that a rapid armoured advance could drive from Belgium through Holland to the German border in September 1944. The Amercan 101st, the Screaming Eagles, had the task of taking bridges north of Eindhoven, including this area just below the Wilhemina Canal at Son, and the 502nd and 506th Parachute Infantry Regiments dropped with that objective. The Memorial is just off Airbornelaan on the edge of a small ornamental garden. The wooden sign with the magnificent eagle commemorates the liberation of Eindhoven on 18th September, the day after the Operation started. In the garden behind the sign is a stone monument with a thematic map showing the Wilhemina Canal, the 502nd and 506th drop zones and Son and Eindhoven. Alongside is a torch of freedom and the date 18 September 1944. Date: 2001

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative print captures the 101st Airborne Division Memorial located near Eindhoven, Netherlands. The memorial stands as a testament to the bravery and sacrifice of the American soldiers who participated in Operation Market Garden in September 1944. During this pivotal WWII operation, the 101st Airborne Division, also known as the "Screaming Eagles," were tasked with capturing a series of bridges north of Eindhoven, including the area just below the Wilhemina Canal at Son. The 502nd and 506th Parachute Infantry Regiments dropped in this region with the objective of securing these critical crossing points. The memorial, situated off Airbornelaan on the edge of a small ornamental garden, features a striking wooden sign adorned with a magnificent eagle. This symbol commemorates the liberation of Eindhoven on September 18, 1944 – the day after Operation Market Garden began. Behind the sign lies a stone monument, which includes a thematic map depicting the Wilhemina Canal, the 502nd and 506th drop zones, and the towns of Son and Eindhoven. The monument also features a torch of freedom and the date 18 September 1944. This poignant memorial serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by the 101st Airborne Division during Operation Market Garden, an operation that aimed to drive rapidly from Belgium through Holland to the German border. The successful capture of these bridges was essential for the Allied forces' advance and ultimately played a significant role in the eventual defeat of Nazi Germany.
