EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the 15th Battalion, Canadian 48th Highlanders Memorial at Mount Sorrel in Belgium, commemorating the brave soldiers who fought in the Battle of Mount Sorrel during World War I. The Battle of Mount Sorrel, also known as the Third Battle of Ypres or Ieper, took place between June 2 and 13, 1916. It was a significant engagement during the larger Battle of Ypres, which was part of the larger Western Front campaign. The Canadian Corps, under the command of Lieutenant-General Julian Byng, launched an attack on the German-held position at Mount Sorrel with the aim of capturing the high ground and improving the defensive lines. The 15th Battalion, Canadian 48th Highlanders, played a crucial role in the battle. The Highlanders, dressed in their iconic kilts and tartans, advanced under heavy German artillery fire and fierce machine gun resistance. Despite the heavy casualties, they managed to capture their objectives and hold the ground against counter-attacks. This photograph, taken in 2016, shows the memorial dedicated to the fallen soldiers of the 15th Battalion, Canadian 48th Highlanders, at the site of the Battle of Mount Sorrel. The memorial stands as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by these brave men during the First World War. The inscription on the memorial reads, "In Memory of the Officers and Men of the 15th Battalion, Canadian 48th Highlanders, who fell in the Battle of Mount Sorrel, June 2-13, 1916." The Battle of Mount Sorrel was a significant victory for the Allied forces, but it came at a great cost. Over 3,000 Canadian soldiers were killed or wounded during the battle. Today, the memorial stands as a testament to their courage and sacrifice.
