EDITORS COMMENTS

This evocative print captures the bravery and heroism of the 17th Lancers during the Charge of the Light Brigade at the Battle of Balaclava on 25th October 1854, during the Crimean War. The Crimean War (1853-1856) was a major European conflict fought between Russia and an alliance of the Ottoman Empire, France, the United Kingdom, and Sardinia. The Charge of the Light Brigade is one of the most famous episodes of the war, immortalized in Tennyson's poem 'The Charge of the Light Brigade.' In this image, we see the 17th Lancers, also known as the 'Death or Glory Boys,' galloping fearlessly into the Valley of Death, facing an enemy artillery battery that outnumbered them. The scene is filled with a sense of drama and intensity, as the riders and their horses charge forward, their determination etched on their faces. The horses, too, seem to be in the heat of the moment, their ears pricked and eyes focused on the target. The print, by John Charlton, masterfully conveys the chaos and danger of the battlefield. The smoke from the artillery fire fills the air, obscuring the vision of the riders and adding to the sense of uncertainty and risk. The contrast between the bright uniforms of the Lancers and the dark, ominous sky above emphasizes the starkness of the scene and the gravity of the situation. Despite the odds against them, the 17th Lancers managed to inflict significant damage on the Russian artillery battery, but at a great cost. The charge resulted in the loss of 110 men and 135 horses, but it became a symbol of British courage and determination during the Crimean War. This print is a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made by the soldiers during this conflict and the enduring legacy of their bravery.
