EDITORS COMMENTS
Albert III the Bold, Duke of Saxony, Duc de Saxe (1443-1500), is depicted in this stunning chromolithograph from Loredan Larchey's Ancient Equestrian Armorials of the Order of the Golden Fleece and Europe in the 15th century. The Duke is shown in full regalia, wearing the distinctive insignia of the Order of the Golden Fleece around his neck. Established in 1430 by Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy, the Order of the Golden Fleece was an elite chivalric order known for its prestige and influence in European politics. Albert III, also known as Albert the Pious, was the eldest son of Ernest, Duke of Saxony, and his second wife, Elisabeth of Brandenburg. He ruled the Duchy of Saxony from 1464 until his death in 1500. During his reign, Albert III expanded the territories of Saxony and strengthened its position in the Holy Roman Empire. He was also a prominent member of the Order of the Golden Fleece and served as its Grand Master from 1495 until his death. The chromolithograph, which is part of the illustrated manuscript 4790 in the Bibliotheque de l'Arsenal in Paris, provides a vivid and detailed portrayal of Albert III in his prime. The rich colors and intricate details of his armor and clothing reflect the artistic and cultural achievements of the late medieval period. The image serves as a testament to Albert III's status as a powerful and respected ruler in Europe during the 15th century.
