EDITORS COMMENTS
Andrea Appiani's Allegorical Figure of Europe, as depicted in this hand-colored copperplate engraving from Giulio Ferrario's "Costumes Ancient and Modern of the Peoples of the World," presents Europe personified as a regal figure seated on a throne. She is dressed in a rich purple robe, symbolizing power and dignity, and holds various objects that represent wisdom, authority, and the arts. Europe is depicted with a book in her hand, signifying knowledge and learning, and a globe at her feet, representing the world. A palette and sceptre are also present, symbolizing the creative and ruling aspects of Europe. The lyre, an ancient musical instrument, represents the harmonious culture and artistic heritage of Europe. Completing the scene is an owl, a traditional symbol of wisdom, perched on a branch above Europe's head. This image of Europe was inspired by Andrea Appiani's painting of the same name, which was created during the late 18th century. Appiani was an Italian Neoclassical painter who was known for his allegorical and historical works. The painting was likely commissioned by Emperor Justinian II and his wife Empress Theodora, who ruled the Byzantine Empire during the late 7th and early 8th centuries. The imperial courtiers, Giovanni Antonio Sasso and Bulgari Slayer, are also depicted in the engraving, paying homage to Europe and her symbolic representation of the cultural and artistic achievements of the European world. This historical image provides a fascinating glimpse into the artistic and political landscape of Europe during the Byzantine Empire and the Neoclassical period.
