EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcoloured copperplate stipple engraving, titled "Afanite 1, and Chalcedony Flint with Mastoids 2" is a captivating illustration from Antoine Laurent de Jussieu's "Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali" or "Dictionary of Natural Science," published in Florence, Italy, in 1837. The illustration was engraved by Corsi, with drawings by Jean Gabriel Pretre and direction by Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin. The image showcases two distinct types of minerals: Aphanite and Chalcedony Flint. Aphanite, depicted in the foreground, is a type of volcanic rock characterized by its porous and fibrous texture. The mineral's name derives from the Greek word "aphanos," meaning invisible or obscure, which refers to its cryptic origin. In the background, Chalcedony Flint with Mastoids is illustrated. Chalcedony is a microcrystalline variety of Quartz, known for its beautiful banding and agate-like appearance. The term "mastoids" refers to the rounded bony prominences located at the base of the skull. The association of Chalcedony Flint with mastoids suggests that these minerals may have been used as tools or ornaments in prehistoric times. Turpin, the French botanical illustrator responsible for the direction of this engraving, is considered one of the greatest of the 19th century. His meticulous attention to detail and mastery of the copperplate stipple engraving technique are evident in this exquisite illustration. The intricate patterns and textures of the Aphanite and Chalcedony Flint are beautifully rendered, making this a valuable addition to any mineralogy or geology collection.
