EDITORS COMMENTS
"This evocative print captures the Australian 5th Division Memorial at Polygon Wood, located in the historic battlefield of Ypres, Belgium. The memorial stands proudly on the old rifle buttes, offering a breathtaking view over both the Polygon Wood Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) Cemetery and the New Zealand National Memorial. The Battle of Polygon Wood, which took place on September 26, 1917, saw the Australian 1st, 2nd, and 5th Divisions engage in fierce fighting. The 14th Brigade of the 5th Division played a significant role in capturing the northern part of the wood, hence the memorial's placement. This poignant site serves as a reminder of the brave Australian soldiers who fought and sacrificed their lives during World War I, particularly during the Battle of Polygon Wood in 1917. The memorial's location, overlooking the serene cemetery, adds to the solemnity and reflection of the historical significance of this site." (250 words)
