EDITORS COMMENTS
This lithograph, created by Karl Joseph Brodtmann in 1836 as part of Heinrich Rudolf Schinz's Illustrated Natural History of Men and Animals, offers a fascinating glimpse into the diverse cultural landscape of Australia during the early 19th century. The image features three Australian Aborigines of Malay descent, each adorned in traditional attire and body art. In the center stands Mour-Re-Mour-Ga, a man wearing a turban, his face expressionless but for the slight furrow of his brow. To his left is Y-Erran-Gou-La-Ga, a man with intricate face painting that covers his entire visage, save for his eyes and mouth. His hair is styled in a topknot, and he wears a simple loincloth. To the right is Ou-Re-Kine, a woman dressed in a bandana and a skirt made of animal hides. Her arms are adorned with elaborate tattoos, and her face is painted with geometric patterns. This ethnographic portrait, created by the German artist Brodtmann under the guidance of Swiss naturalist Schinz, is a testament to the rich cultural heritage of the Australian Aboriginal people. The influence of Indonesian and Malay traders and settlers is evident in the Malay features and clothing of the subjects depicted. The lithograph is a valuable historical record of a time when the world was still being explored and documented, and it continues to captivate audiences with its intriguing depiction of a people and a place far removed from the artists' European homeland.
