EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured lithograph depicts the renowned French ballet dancer Francisque Garnier Berthier in the title role of Max in the ballet-pantomime "L'Ombre" (The Shadow) by Theodore and Hippolyte Cogniard, which premiered at the Theatre de la Porte St. Martin in Paris in 1843. Berthier's graceful and expressive performance as Max was captured beautifully in this illustration by Victor Dollet, which was published in the prestigious Galerie Dramatique: Costumes des Theatres de Paris in 1845. Berthier's costume, designed by Alexandre Lacauchie, is a stunning example of the elaborate and intricate attire worn by male dancers during the Romantic era. Max's outfit consists of a fitted, short-sleeved tunic adorned with gold trim and a voluminous, pleated skirt. The skirt is held up by a wide belt, and he wears a high-collared shirt and a sash around his waist. His hair is styled in a classic Romantic fashion, with long curls framing his face. The ballet-pantomime "L'Ombre" was a popular success during its time, and Berthier's performance as Max was highly acclaimed by critics and audiences alike. The story follows the adventures of Max, a young man who falls in love with a beautiful shadow that he encounters in the forest. The shadow, which is actually a fairy, leads Max on a series of trials and challenges, ultimately rewarding him with true love. This exquisite lithograph is a testament to the artistry and creativity of the dancers, designers, and illustrators of the 19th century French ballet scene. It offers a glimpse into the world of Romantic ballet and the captivating performances that delighted audiences over 175 years ago.
