This evocative print captures the aftermath of the Battle of Fuentes de Onoro, fought between the French army led by Marshal Massena and the allied forces of the Sixth Coalition, under the command of the Duke of Wellington, on May 3-5, 1811, in Castile and Leon, Spain. The battle took place during the Peninsular War, a significant campaign of the Napoleonic Wars, which saw the Spanish and Portuguese resistance against the French occupation of the Iberian Peninsula. The scene depicted in the print shows the exhausted and wounded soldiers from both sides, gathered around the battlefield, as the sun sets over the rolling hills.
