EDITORS COMMENTS
This hand-colored steel engraving, drawn and engraved by Adolph Fries for Felix-Edouard Guerin-Meneville's "Dictionnaire Pittoresque d'Histoire Naturelle" (Picturesque Dictionary of Natural History), published in Paris between 1834 and 1839, showcases a charming encounter between a Beech Marten (Martes foina), earwigs (Forficula auricularia), and various ferns (Filices species). The Beech Marten, a member of the weasel family, is depicted gracefully balancing on a branch, its bushy tail curled around a beech tree trunk. Its agile and nimble nature allows it to move effortlessly through the forest, making it a skilled climber and an elusive creature. Two earwigs, the insects with distinctive pincers, are shown in the foreground. Their elongated, flat bodies and distinctive appendages make them easily recognizable. Earwigs are omnivorous, feeding on a wide range of foods, including decaying plant material, insects, and even small vertebrates. Surrounding the Beech Marten and earwigs are an array of ferns, adding a lush and verdant backdrop to the scene. Ferns, members of the Filices genus, are non-flowering plants that thrive in damp environments. Their delicate fronds and intricate structures make them a popular subject for naturalists and artists alike. This exquisite engraving not only highlights the beauty and intricacy of these three diverse organisms but also serves as a testament to the meticulous craftsmanship of Adolph Fries and the comprehensive natural history knowledge of Felix-Edouard Guerin-Meneville.
